Upgraded Learning Landscapes for a 21st-Century Campus
Funded by Measure D and designed in collaboration with HY Architects, the renovation of Tice Creek School in Walnut Creek reimagines outdoor spaces as flexible, multipurpose environments that support a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor learning.
As the landscape architect, Gates Studio led the design of dynamic outdoor areas that support STEAM programming, social interaction, and student well-being. Six new outdoor classrooms, including one adjacent to the STEAM building, provide adaptable learning environments. Shaded lunch patios, a turf-covered amphitheater beneath existing trees, and an extended blacktop area offer engaging spaces for play, gathering, and outdoor instruction. The result is a welcoming, modern campus environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and connection.
This project was completed in 2019.
