Designing a Welcoming and Restorative Setting for Veterans
As part of the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System, the San Jose Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) provides primary care, mental health, diagnostic, and ancillary services in a setting designed to support the well-being of Veterans.
Working with prime consultant Hoefer Welker, Gates Studio served as Project Landscape Architect, designing a warm, accessible arrival experience that reflects the clinic’s mission of inclusivity and healing. A drought-tolerant, regionally appropriate planting palette enhances the therapeutic environment while reducing maintenance needs. Key site features—including a memorial plaza and a thoughtfully integrated art wall—honor Veterans and their service, creating opportunities for reflection and connection to nature.
This project was completed in 2018.
Project Details
Visitors are welcomed by a memorial plaza framed by a striking plant palette, showcasing a lighted art feature that pays tribute to Veterans and their service.
The views from the new LEED Silver-certified 95,000 SF building are enhanced with courtyard accent planting.
Pedestrian-friendly landscaping encircles the new building.
