Designing a Connected, Wellness-Focused Senior Community
Nestled in San Ramon’s Bishop Ranch with views of Mount Diablo, Belmont Village San Ramon redefines senior living through a seamless blend of comfort, care, and connection. Designed for Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, the 175,000+ sf, six-story community offers 177 residences and a suite of outdoor amenities—from rooftop terraces and walking paths to gardens, bocce courts, and a saltwater pool. As landscape architect, Gates Studio collaborated with HKIT Architects, W.E. O’Neil, and BKF Engineers to craft a restorative, hospitality-inspired environment that encourages movement, social engagement, and wellness. Completed in February 2025, the project received a Pacific Coast Builders Conference Gold Nugget Merit Award for Best Service-Enriched 55+ Community, setting a new benchmark for integrated, wellness-centered design.
This project was completed in 2022.
Key Considerations
Topography and AccessibilityA 480-foot grade change shaped the entire design approach. Working closely with the civil engineer, Gates Studio developed a continuous, accessible circulation system supported by strategic grading and retaining walls, ensuring every resident can comfortably explore the campus.
Fire-Resilient DesignLocated within a fire-prone region, the site required careful compliance with fire management zones. The landscape integrates firescape planting strategies and materials that provide both safety and visual harmony, maintaining the community’s lush, welcoming character.
Active Outdoor LivingOutdoor spaces were designed to keep residents active, social, and connected with nature. From bocce and pickleball courts to putting greens, community gardens, and walking paths, every element encourages recreation, relaxation, and daily engagement with the landscape.
Views and ComfortTaking advantage of sweeping views of surrounding hills and orchards, the design positions gathering areas and courtyards to frame these vistas. Shade trellises, seating nodes, and regionally inspired plantings create comfortable, inviting spaces.
