Belmont Village Bishop Ranch

San Ramon, CA

Restorative, Hospitality-Inspired Design for Every Stage of
Senior Living

Nestled in San Ramon’s Bishop Ranch with views of Mount Diablo, Belmont Village San Ramon redefines senior living through a seamless blend of comfort, care, and connection. Designed for Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, the 175,000+ sf, six-story community offers 177 residences and a suite of outdoor amenities—from rooftop terraces and walking paths to gardens, bocce courts, and a saltwater pool. As landscape architect, Gates Studio collaborated with HKIT Architects, W.E. O’Neil, and BKF Engineers to craft a restorative, hospitality-inspired environment that encourages movement, social engagement, and wellness. Completed in February 2025, the project received a Pacific Coast Builders Conference Gold Nugget Merit Award for Best Service-Enriched 55+ Community, setting a new benchmark for integrated, wellness-centered design.

Key Considerations

Designing Within Utility Constraints

Off-site public underground utilities limited the space for street tree planting. The design team worked closely with engineers to adjust alignments and planting zones, ensuring trees could be successfully established without interfering with underground infrastructure.

Structural Coordination at Every Level

The team worked with structural engineers to understand slab depths and loading capacities for landscape components on the ground plane and upper terraces. The result: lush planting and inviting amenity spaces that meet strict structural and waterproofing requirements.

Views, Shade, and Comfort

Tree placement and canopy design were carefully calibrated to frame mountain views from the rooftop terrace. These adjustments reduced solar glare along the building’s glazed south and west façades, enhancing comfort and visibility.

Indoor-Outdoor Connection

Private patios, outdoor dining terraces, and the west courtyard’s alignment with a future public park strengthen the link between residents, the landscape, and the broader Bishop Ranch community.
