Lila Bringhurst Community Park & School

Fremont, CA

Lila Bringhurst Community Park is a joint-use 2-acre park shared with Lila Bringhurst Elementary School, located in Fremont's Warm Springs Innovation District (District). Both sites are named after Bringhurst, a longtime Fremont resident and community leader who championed the preservation of Fremont's local history and heritage. Since its opening in September 2021, the park offers a compact urban solution for the surrounding residential developments that meets both City public park development standards and State school yard requirements. Lila Bringhurst's central location contributes to the District's goals for pedestrian and bike-friendly infrastructure, as residents can walk through the park and through adjacent linear plazas to access the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART station through the West Access Pedestrian Bridge, which opened in early 2022.

As project landscape architect in collaboration with prime QKA Architects, GATES designed and implemented a variety of outdoor spaces through the 4-acre site, including age-appropriate play areas, a multi-use field, butterfly garden, loop trail, and expanded hardcourt area.
