Jefferson Elementary School Outdoor Learning Project
San Francisco, CA
A Living Classroom in the Heart of the City
In collaboration with HED Architects and BKF Engineers, the project transformed Jefferson Elementary School’s outdoor spaces into interactive landscapes for play and environmental learning. Funded through the SFPUC Green Infrastructure Grant, the redesigned upper and kindergarten play yards function as green infrastructure systems that manage stormwater, reduce heat, and foster biodiversity.
As landscape architect, Gates Studio led the site design, integrating a natural-themed outdoor classroom with log seating and tri-lingual educational signage to engage students in ecology and sustainability. Other key nature-focused features include rain gardens, native planting, and surface striping that traces the site’s natural rainwater flow. Existing trees and cherished play elements were thoughtfully preserved, resulting in a cohesive environment that connects learning, community, and the landscape.
This project was completed in 2025.
