Frontage Road Living Green Trail

Pittsburg, CA

The Frontage Road Living Green Trail transforms unused open space along a local roadway into a vibrant linear park that connects neighborhoods and encourages active, outdoor engagement. Developed through a partnership between the City of Pittsburg, Caltrans, and Clean California, the $2.1 million project introduces a 12-foot-wide pedestrian and bicycle trail featuring fitness stations, natural play features, drought-tolerant demonstration gardens, shaded seating, bioretention zones, and dedicated off-leash dog areas, creating a multi-functional, sustainable corridor.

Gates Studio served as landscape architect under prime consultant Sandis, leading the site planning, master design, and construction documentation. Our design positioned landscape as the foundation of community experience, turning overlooked infrastructure into an accessible, resilient, and welcoming public space that enhances daily life in Pittsburg.
