Happy Friday Park (formerly Bush Avenue Park)
San Pablo, CA
Gates Studio led the transformation of a neglected vacant lot into Happy Friday Park, a 0.13-acre neighborhood destination that brings joy, greenery, and connection to San Pablo’s Bush Avenue community. Once a dumping site, the space was reimagined as a vibrant pocket park with recreation amenities—including play and fitness equipment—plus gathering areas, and lush plantings that reflect San Pablo’s commitment to livable streets and neighborhood pride.
As prime consultant and landscape architect, Gates Studio guided the project from early green infrastructure studies and community engagement through design, documentation, and construction support. The park was funded through a combination of State Parks Per Capita and Caltrans Clean California Local Grant programs, with nearly $500,000 in total grant and local contributions supporting its creation. The result demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design can revitalize small urban spaces and strengthen community identity.
This project was completed in 2024.
